The Wright R-3350 “Cyclone 18” - the trials of the B-29's engines

 



"...On September 29, 1946, a Navy P2V1 Neptune named the “Truculent Turtle” left Perth, Australia and flew 11,236 miles unrefueled to Columbus, Ohio, a record that stood until the Voyager flight around the world during the fall of 1986. The P2V1 was powered by two Wright R-3350 Cyclones. It is hard to believe that a record-setting engine such as this had one of the most difficult developments of any aircraft engine ever to see production. This was largely due to an extremely compressed schedule that tried to do in two years what ordinarily took five...".

"...When the Army requested proposals for a bomber capable of striking targets in Japan, all five bidders proposed the R-3350. The Army ultimately selected the Boeing XB-29 Superfortress and the Consolidated XB-32 Dominator for production. Wright suddenly found itself with the largest and most important engine program of the War. More than 30,000 engines would be required for the B-29 program, plus others for the B-32 and Navy. To further complicate issues, many strategic materials such as mica and core sand were in short supply due to hostilities in India and Madagascar..."

"Actuarial Analysis of the operating life of B-29 aircraft engines", by O L Altman and C G Goor.

1) R-3350's were in critical supply in 1944 and the first half of 1945. Supply problems were easing around the end of the war.
2) Air transportation was used to fly R-3350's to the US for overhaul, at best 2 R-3350's would fit in a cargo plane.
3) Overhauled engines had around 10% lower "life" before the next overhaul.
4) The -23 was the carburettor and the -57 the fuel injected versions. The -23 was modified to improve reliability.
5) The statisticians noted the standard USAAF methodology for forecasting engine life was only suitable for a reasonably static population. Not where there was a steady arrival of more strength using new aircraft.

In terms of engine life, operations in India were the worst, since each combat sortie required three reasonably rapid climbs, India to China, China to Japan, China to India. Next came training in the US, finally the best were the units in the Marianas.

Expected life prior to first overhaul, early operations from India, 163 hours, -23 engines. Using modified -23 engines this had risen to 280 hours by February/March 1945 for aircraft operating from India and 304 hours from the Marianas.

The figures for B-29s used in training were 221 hours and 310 hours versus the 163 and 280 hours figures above.

Operating from India a comparison between the modified and unmodified -23 engines showed 80% of the unmodified and 95.3% of the modified engines survived to over 100 hours, 33.9 of the unmodified and 81.5% of the modified engines survived to over 200 hours, 0.2% of the unmodified and 47.3% of the modified engines survived to over 300 hours.

In the Marianas, as of 20 November 1944 the average hours on each -23 engine removed was 91, by 20 January 1945 it was 151, as of 30 April it was 234. These figures include removals for engine model changes, modifications, accidents and battle damage. They are also under estimates of the normal engine lifetime because so many of the engines were new. The figures include new and overhauled engines, so it is either the number of hours since the engine was built for new engines or since overhaul for the overhauled engines.

Engine hours before removal as of 31 May was 259 hours, and 31 July 272 hours. These figures are for engines removed because of mechanical problems only.

Even in July the steady number of new B-29s arriving drove down the average engine hours per removed engine.

A study as of 31 July 1945 noted in the Marianas the -23 engines 96.8% of new and 92.5% of overhauled logged more than 100 hours before replacement, 87.5% and 75.7% respectively logged over 200 hours, 62.7 and 43.4 logged over 300 hours, 19% and 8% logged over 400 hours, none logged over 500 hours.

As noted above the training schools in the US went through R-3350 engines quicker than the combat units in the Marianas, for example 57.9% and 36.4% logged over 300 hours, but once this mark was passed the engines in the US held up more, so 24.6% and 10.4% logged over 400 hours, and 1.2% and 0.2% managed over 500 hours.

The fuel injected -57 engine had a higher time between overhauls, so in the above study 31.2% used in training logged over 400 hours, and 4.9% logged over 500 hours.

To kick off 2017 two awesome aviation events from 2016 that we did not get around to covering last year!

B-29 Superfortress “Doc” flew for the first time during July 2016 after being rolled out of a former Boeing Wichita hangar on March 23, 2015, following 15 years and 300,000 hours of restoration work by scores of volunteers. The bomber, built by Boeing in Wichita in 1945, had been parked in the California Mojave desert for 42 years. The aircraft was discovered in 1987 and, in 2000, was trucked to Wichita where restoration began. The project went through a hiatus, the victim of a poor economy and lack of hangar space, when a group of Wichita business leaders and aviation enthusiasts formed a nonprofit group called Doc’s Friends and restarted the restoration. Boeing donated the hangar space. The B-29 is one of only two to be flyable. Securing a permanent home in Wichita for the aircraft and operating the aircraft as a flying museum will probably prove as problematic as the British Vulcan to the Sky project. B-29 Doc organizers estimate it will take another $7 million to $9 million to secure permanent hangar space. Below; some screen captures from the B-29 'Doc' first flight video posted below.










This blog is a big fan of the F-4 Phantom, usually RAF and RN variants! But during 2016 I was fortunate enough to see two Greek F-4s in the air and up close in the static at the RIAT 2016 show in the UK. Elsewhere  the U.S. Air Force F-4 Phantom II made its final flight, after more than 50 years of service, at Holloman Air Force Base on 21 December 2016. B-29 Superfortress, Calcutta, India April 1944



On 02 April 1944 the first United States Army Air Forces B-29 Superfortress arrived near Calcutta, India, after an 11,530-mile (18,567-km) trip from Kansas, including stops at Presque Isle, Maine; Gander, Newfoundland; Marrakech, Morocco; Cairo, Egypt; and Karachi, and a 2,700-mile (4,348-km) non-stop transatlantic flight between Gander and Marrakech. Before it could land, 6,000 U.S. troops and 27,000 Indians laboured for two months to build the runways and bases. At the same time, since the B-29s would be based In India, out of the reach of the Japanese, thousands more Chinese were busy constructing staging areas in the neighborhood of Chengtu, China. By 10 May, the Chengtu bases were ready for the B-29s. These bases were within the range of the Japanese homeland, although not yet within range of Tokyo.

B-29 Superfortress 'Top Secret' - 509th Composite Group ( Hiroshima and Nagasaki).

This B-29 'Top Secret' was one of 15 B-29's that Paul Tibbets ordered using the code word "Silverplate" which gave him unlimited power for anything he needed. The crew of V-72 "Top Secret" flew both atomic missions, utilizing two different B-29's. The crew flew as the Hiroshima standby B-29 leaving before the Enola Gay and stationed on Iwo Jima  in case the Enola Gay malfunctioned. If it did, the bomb would have been transferred to the waiting B-29 and the Enola Gay Crew would have flown the standby B-29 to Hiroshima. This crew flew the advance weather recon B-29 to Nagasaki before the bomb was dropped to report the weather to the B-29 "Bockscar". Krauss' book is a complete history of the 509th Composite Group, the WWII Army Air corps unit that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, from their formation in 1944 to their return home to the United States in December 1945. The book contains over 125 personal stories from veterans of the unit as well as over 800 illustrations and an 8 page colour section of the nose art of the B-29s. Photos of all crews, all missions and the history of each plane is detailed in the book, as well as a complete roster of all men in the unit.

1. "Mission Inn" was a B-29 assigned to the 22nd Bomb Group, which was based at March AFB, California. The crew named her in honor of the Mission Inn, a favorite hang out for USAF personnel back in the day that was located in nearby Riverside. It served in Korea from July-October 1950 when the 22nd forward deployed to Kadena AFB, Okinawa during the height of the Pusan Perimeter crisis.



2. "Toddlin' Turtle" belonged to the 22nd Bomb Group as well and saw combat in Korea at the same time as Mission Inn. Photo was taken on Okinawa.



3. "Lake Success Express" (44-69980) flew originally with the 92nd Bomb Group as "Deal Me In." It was later transfered to the 98th Bomb Group, where it saw combat in Korea. It was destroyed at Tinker Air Force base on August 8, 1954.



4. Chief Spokane was another former 92nd Bomb Group B-29 that ended up in the 98th in time to see combat over Korea. 44-61825.



5. "Sheeza Goer!" belonged to that oldest of Pacific-based heavy bombardment groups, the 19th. Flying from Guam, this Superfort saw action over Korea in 1950. Her ultimate fate is unknown. 45-21716.
