U2-C deployment RAF Wethersfield 1975

via Steve Hill on FB Anglia Military Aviation Group

 ".. Anybody remember the U-2C deployment to RAF Wethersfield from May until June 1975? It consisted of five U-2Cs from the 349thSRS/100thSRW(SAC) Davis-Monthan AFB, Az flying high altitude sampling missions, hence the grey camo c/s. One jet (56-6700) was lost near Bonn, West Germany on May 29th and was later replaced by 56-6716. The other four aircraft involved were 56-6680, 6701, 6707 and 6714. As can be seen here they operated very close to the base fence, making photography very easy. This amused the Yanks hence the sign " Spys parking only " they placed on the fence ...! "

Meteor RA 490, Boulton Paul 111 Prone Pilot Meteor WK 935 -50th Anniversary of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough 7/8 July 1955

via Colin Dodds;

 "..Help wanted. I very recently acquired a small collection of original old 9cm square prints which include the formation photo that I believe may be unique. Almost certainly taken at Farnborough, these three aircraft never appeared together at a Farnborough show. Left to right are Meteor RA 490, the aircraft developed by Westland with two RR Nenes used for jet deflection experiments. Then the Boulton Paul 111 and then right the Prone Pilot Meteor WK 935. Has anyone else seen or got any photos of this flypast? Can anyone help with any more details. I imagine it was sometime between 1952 and 1954. Any further information or thoughts appreciated..."

and via Ian Powell;

 "..this may just be coincidence but the Cosford history sheet for the Prone meteor says "Flown, and statically displayed, at the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough 7/8 July 1955". Also of interest is this quote "The Flight Division of Aerodynamics Department of RAE was colloquially known as ‘Aero Flight’. The Division’s personnel moved to Bedford from Farnborough from Spring 1955 onwards, with Danny Lean (future Division Head) being one of the last to move in Jan 1956. The main group of research aircraft moved to Bedford in November 1955. One of the first research aircraft flying at Bedford, in April 1955, was the jet-deflection Meteor RA490, re-locating from Farnborough each day..."

Amiot AAC Toucan (Ju 52) in French Indochina (Vietnam)

The Junkers Ju 52 first flew in 1932 and was a key bomber and transport aircraft of the early Luftwaffe and continued front-line service right through the war. During the German occupation of France the Vichy authorities set to work to produce aircraft for the Germans as a means of re-establishing French industry and industrial employment. The former Amiot factories in the Paris suburb of Colombes produced 321  Ju 52s for the Germans. Post-war, one of the quickest ways of re-establishing the French Air Force (Armée de l'Air) was to put this and other German types straight back into service and re-open production lines. The Amiot factory was re-named the Atelier Aéronautiques de Colombes (AAC) and continued to turn out Ju 52s under the designation AAC 1 Toucan. The first post-war Groupe de Transport  GT 3/15 was formed at Le Bourget on 1 February 1945 and the type was to play a major role in French Indochine (Vietnam) as a transport, bomber, medi-vac and paratroop transport type - exactly as it had in the Luftwaffe- serving principally with GT 1/64 Béarn, GT 2/60 Franche-Comté and GT 3/64 Tonkin..

French paratroops preparing to board JU-52 (Amiot AAC 1 Toucan) trimotor transport aircraft for an air drop. Puppy dog mascot seen amongst their packs. They board the aircraft. Views of French paratroops descending from the JU-52 trimotor aircraft, and landing in a field in Indochina.
